Developing Your Press Kit
If Any of the Following Apply:
1. You've Had Your 15 Minutes of Fame,
and Want to Extend it 2. You Have Been Interviewed, or Your Product Has Been Featured by
the Media 3. You Have a Platform (a select circle or group / audience
you are known among), and it is growing. 4. You Have a Voice
to a Specific Audience and Need to Refine Your Overall Press
Materials
Then
You Need a Press Kit!
Here is a list of items to consider
for inclusion in your press kit:
Executive / Personal Bio
Press Releases Company Histories Feature
Stories
REMEMBER: The finished
kit is a strategic communications tool to assist the press
and other inquirers, when media comes knocking, (or when
media has left the building - as a follow-up).
|
FIRST STEP:
CONTENT
If you aren't a professional writer, then spend the money to make
sure your biography and other press kit materials come off with
panache. Remember the rule about first impressions. You can
never take them back.
Jey Associates or any other
marketing and public relations firm will offer professional press
kit advice and development. If hiring a service to do this is
out of your scope, then look around you within your own personal
network. You'd be surprised at the writers and creative people
you may have in your arsenal of colleagues. Tap into that arsenal
and get your press kit started.
SECOND
STEP: MATERIALS Be sure you have all the materials
necessary to put your press kit together. Every last detail
should be top notch, and reflect your personality. From the
pocket folder and cover label, to the color and texture of the paper
inside (we recommend simple and professional white rag bond for all
press kit materials, aside from 4-color copies and head shots) -
your press kit should be obviously YOU.
THIRD STEP:
ASSEMBLE & SEND Once you're happy with the contents of your
press kit and the overall look and feel, it's time to put those
babies together and get them out to the media and your contact
database. We suggest you contact members of the media to query
them on their interest prior to sending your press kit cold.
Other contacts would include conference organizers, agents, and
public relations or marketing people at affiliate or ancillary
organizations related to your field of expertise. |
